Our i-Things have left the building.

I have been limiting our time with the i-Things since we had a little bit of a malfunction over Spring Break.  The kids thought it was their inherent right to play them 24/7, down to bringing them into the bathroom while they were on the toilet.

After trying to explain that having an i-Thing was a privilege and not a right and after having to tell them that more times than I care to remember, I believe I made the fatal mistake of yelling out: "That's it, I've had it.  Hand them over.  You will now only get your i-Thing after, and only after, all your work is done around here."

Not that I'm all into child labor or anything like that, but I do expect my kids to eat their meals and get dressed in the morning without screaming they can't pull their arm through their sleeve because their damn i-Touch is stuck.

And like a bad case of VD I could not undo what I said so I had to stick with it.  Sure it involved more negotiating and haggling than when we bought our last car but I think we all came out the other end with a fair settlement.

So now when the kids are done with their homework and spelling words we play games and generally bug the crap out of each other.

We're using the chalk table to practice spelling words.
Way cool.
And yeah, he was super pissed he spelled 'accidentally' wrong.

We play games called:

  • In the Olden Days When Mom Was Little and There Was OMG Nothing to Do
  • How to Get Naked and Moon the Neighbors
  • Now I'm Really Bored, Is Dad Home Yet?
  • Oh God, Why Do You Cooking That Again When You Know I Won't Eat It???
  • How to Disassemble Remotes and Put Them Back Together and Hope Mom Doesn't Notice
  • and my personal favorite, Poo or Puke?  Make Alex Puke by Standing Him Next to Gracie After a New Poo Diaper Dump

And for our record keepers out there, the girls are winning 2-0.  The Poo or Puke game is not working in Alex's favor.

As I was making dinner the other night, I left the kids to their own devices with some construction paper and markers.  Alex came up with a board game that made me smile from ear to ear.  He made number cards since he didn't have any dice and even made small cards to use as playing chips.

Click on it to super size.

A player starts off with $20.00 and the player with the most money at the end of the game wins.  He has things such as renting a hotel room--loose $0.21, you get robbed--loose $1.00 and fixing your neighbor car--get paid $90.00.

Granted it's all about money and seriously, a robber only takes a buck, but how cute is that?  I love it.

He's laughing, giggling and so proud of himself.  In this moment he is happy.

Instead of playing i-Touchs in the evening while Alex is getting his asthma meds and nebulizer, we've been playing his game.

And I'm loving every minute of it.

Every Single Minute.

  1. Best board game ever!!!Has anyone been unlucky enough to get all the way ahead and then land on the "you're out" box just one step away from winning?

You've inspired me. I need to find something else for Cam to do outside of iPad and watching Mickey Mouse. Hmmm......

  2. I'm glad Jacob only uses my iPod every once in a while, but he loves his DS and the CPU. I wish I could get him to just play a board game, let alone make one.

  3. OMG you're a genius!! Sometimes you have to just LOSE IT to grab some child-attention lmao I'm with Alex.. I can NOT stand those dang poopy diapers. Whenever one would come you could see me with my shirt pulled up over my nose, and changing "omg omg omg omg omg" and breathing out of my mouth ONLY! hahaaa Jebus forbid it leaked out. Those clothes were just thrown away!!!!!! Yeah, I get Alex a LOT! lol

By the way, that game is awesome!! Thats our rule here. If you've messed up, hand over ALL of the electronics. Amazing the tears that a teenager and drum up.

    1. The diapers are the worst. Alex darn near pukes if I don't get to her right away. He will puke if he gets wind of it. The only good thing that comes out of it, is that she's had a diaper rash like, once in her lifetime!!!

  4. I loved this story too!! The games you guys played really cracked me up, especially "Oh God, Why Are You Cooking That Again When You Know I Won't Eat It???". It's a generational game my family have really enjoyed.

I'm thinking of banning the iThingies.... Any day now... But first I need to make a little one of these velcro iPad time counters ( http://youtu.be/pOAivs58SOU ) and use it like she uses it, cause my little guys getting *really* bad at the table. So yeah, any day now.... **facepalm** Oh well, at least the nice weather is coming, more options on what to do!

  5. That game is friggin' adorable! I can only wish for the day that Connor would make up something like that.

I've had to start haggling with him over time with the DS. It has become a huge pain in the butt.

Also, we need a chalk table.

    1. Yeah, it was a moment of insanity when I took them away.

The chalk table is for the baby but he likes it for his spelling words. The fine motor is still so hard for him (hence the bad handwriting on the game) and he prefers the big chalk and the ability to erase his mistakes.

  6. Has Milton Bradley won the bidding war for that?! Look what happens when the electronics are removed! You are an inspiration but truthfully? I'd rather have a root canal than take away the iThingie... (selfish and fearful - yup, that's me!)

Looks like a lot of adverbs on that list! Love it!

  8. Oh this made me nostalgic! My siblings and I use to always make our own board games...it made me sad because Corbin hasn't attempted that- I think we too need to have an iBreak.

  10. oh, and idevices wouldn't last in my house because my kids TRASH THINGS and when Jack gets ticked off, he DESTROYS THE OBJECT OF HIS FRUSTRATION.

    1. Then this won't work for you at all. Those i-things are way to expensive to have destroyed. Alex goes up and trashes his room. Sigh.

  11. As I'm reading/typing, my children are playing a convoluted Lego game. The TV is off, all computers but mine are off. All I can hear is their happy play. It is fantastic.

  16. That is something else! What a smart kid. And how nice of you to do your own case study for all of us, reassuring us that much use of i-thingies, followed by sudden removal, doesn't kill our kids OR their creativity.

And BTW - those last 3 boxes before the end of the game are killer! So close to the end but then bang! Back to the beginning.

  17. I need to ban the kids from the computer. Today after school in the van, Danny said, "Finally, no more school til next week. Now we can play on the computer all day long!" He's not going to be pleased when I inform him that he will not in fact be on the computer all day.
